Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you have group solutions for companies & organizations?

For companies and organizations looking for group solutions, our policy is outlined below:

A 10% discount will be honored if company/organization wants custom programming and has a minimum of 20 employee participants.

  • What are the differences between taking a course for credit and taking a course on a noncredit basis?

Your decision whether to take a course on a credit or a noncredit basis depends on what you hope to get out of your experience at The New School’s Open Campus. If you wish to learn something new purely for personal growth, without the worry of grades, then a noncredit course is right for you.

On the other hand, taking the same course for credit, if available, offers you an opportunity to accrue the last few credits needed to complete your degree or begin to earn transferable credits you can use later when you embark on a new educational voyage as a degree-seeking student. In this instance, additional fees will apply and we recommend speaking to an advisor about your unique situation.

  • What about certificates? What do they offer that individual courses do not?

Certificate programs enable you to jump-start a career shift, advance in your field, or try a new one. Our certificate programs offer the rigor of a degree program with the flexibility working professionals need.

Worried that you don’t have the background skills you need to get started? Our noncredit certificates (hyperlink to Certificate Programs page) are structured to provide you with all the courses you need to develop a solid foundation.

  • Can I change my registration status between noncredit, credit, and certificate once I’ve already registered?

For instructions on how to change your course status, please review the Add/Drop and Withdrawal Policies for Open Campus students, which can be found on the registrar's website.

  • Does Open Campus offer financial aid for its courses and programs?

Students admitted to selected continuing education diploma and certificate programs may qualify for financial aid on the basis of academic merit and/or financial need. Please contact the office of Student Financial Services to discuss your particular situation.

  • How do I know if I qualify for a tuition waiver, and how may I use one?

The New School offers a tuition waiver benefit for courses taken at the university once an employee has completed the required waiting period. This benefit is extended to faculty, staff, and eligible family members. Please read the Tuition Waiver Plan Policy or visit HR for more detailed information regarding eligibility, courses, guidelines, and potential tax implications.

If you qualify, there are two ways to register using a tuition waiver. The simpler way is to fill out a tuition waiver form and submit it in person prior to the payment deadlines for the term. Fill out the form and bring it to Human Resources at 79 Fifth Avenue, 18th floor, New York City. Upon approval and processing, you may then register for your class(es) in person at the Registrar’s Office, on the second floor of the same building.

If you prefer to register online to save your spot, you can register through FlexReg and your MyNewSchool account. However, please note that you will have to pay upfront and then submit your tuition waiver form for reimbursement. Please read the Tuition Waiver Plan Policy or visit HR for more detailed information on the application process.
