Writing the Young Adult Novel

The popularity of Young Adult Fiction has experienced an explosion over the last decade leading many new and established writers to the genre. In this workshop, students work through ten craft sessions covering what makes a YA book, focusing on voice, point of view, conflict, character, setting, dialogue, exposition, genre, and revision. We read short excerpts from YA fiction to illustrate each craft session and then write short, guided exercises for each topic and workshop one longer chapter. The objective is to produce the first 1-3 chapters of a YA book, an outline, and a proposal. Guests from the publishing industry visit to discuss contemporary trends. This class is for any writer, young or old, experienced or novice, who is interested in writing YA novel.
