Technology Innovation for Social Impact

This course will explore the newly emerging realm of socio-tech innovation and how technological innovation can be harnessed to create positive social impact. Students will also learn to critically assess the impact of technology innovation on various stakeholder groups including negative externalities of technological innovation.

  • The difference between and convergence of technology innovation, social innovation, business innovation, and socio-tech innovation.
  • How technological innovation impact is influenced by venture orientation, organizational structure, and customer/beneficiary alignment in social ventures.
  • Influence of the tenure and innovation stance of venture founders and key team members, complexity and trialability of the innovation, legal structure and social networks
  • What is the human, economic, organizational and social implications of technology innovation?
  • Understand the role of technology in social innovation.
  • Distinguish between technology innovation and social innovation frameworks and practice.
  • Conduct a systematic analysis of and map the human, economic, organizational and social implications of a particular technology innovation that you have identified.
  • Apply key technology innovation concepts to social innovations.
