Construction Techniques 1

Learn basic draping, flat patternmaking, and sewing techniques, along with principles of design. Topics covered include three-dimensional muslin interpretation of skirts and bodices, developing slopers, and constructing a garment. Bring to the first class a #2 pencil, pins, paper scissors, and one yard of lightweight muslin. Prerequisites: none.

What you will learn
  • Draping, trueing, pinning basic bodice and skirt, developing a sloper.
  • Draping cowl neck bodice and flared skirt.
  • Dart manipulation of eight dart positions using slash and spread and pivot methods.
  • Developing original design using flat patternmaking method.
  • Fabric layout, pinning marking and cutting of original design.
  • Hand sewing, machine sewing and finishing techniques to complete design.
Benefits
  • Become familiar with all tools and materials needed to drape muslin patterns, make flat patterns and construct garments.
  • Drape a basic bodice, skirt, cowl neck bodice and flared skirt ,as well as create flat patterns using a sloper.
