About This Certificate

Prepare for a career in design by learning English. The ESL + Design Certificate program is designed for international students who wish to attend art and design school in the United States and need to improve their English. The program helps students improve their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or refresh their English language skills and adjust to life at a university in the United States. Students participate in a structured set of intensive English language (ESL) courses, a design studio, and short supplemental workshops, and receive an orientation to life in the United States.

Timeline to Completion: The full-time curriculum involves 18 hours in class per week for 12 weeks in the fall and spring and 8 weeks in the summer. A placement exam is administered at the time of admission; duration is determined for each student on the basis of program administrators’ assessment of his or her needs.
